New Year Trek - Guadalest

Guadalest is often mentioned in various guides as one of the "must-visit" towns and villages  throughout the Valencia region, even one of the most beautiful villages in all of Spain. The reservoir looks amazing from up on high with its green water (caused by tiny particles of silt suspended in the water). However, not many see it from down below which is exactly what we decided to do as we've been enjoying fantastic weather since the New Year.
Our route started at the village of Beniarda, which is located a couple of minutes drive from the town of Benimantell, which itself neighbours Guadalest.

Having walked through the village of Beniarda, this is the view we were greeted with.

The walking tracks our also shared with cyclists and one or two practicing with drones.

We decided to walk along the track towards the dam, which was muddy in parts as shaded.

This photo was taken from a spot suitable for (strong) swimmers, close to the parking area near the actual dam. Probably best to wait for the warmer months I'd say!

Here we are crossing the dam across the river, built between 1953 and 1964, measuring 270 meters in length and supplying water to all the towns and villages in the Marina Baixa area, including Benidorm.

The route back is via a quiet rural road......

......which takes you away from the water in parts.

Almost finished.

Back in picturesque Beniarda.

And a very well deserved cold drink and snack.

The walk took us approximately 2 hours 40 minutes with a 20 minute picnic stop too, the distance came in at 11 kms and I thoroughly recommend it (my wife and I have done it twice now). It's not a particularly difficult walk but there are several ascents and descents along the way, plus at the start of the track, we did have to cross a stream which could have been muddier (and messier) if it had rained.
